Woman breaks down in tears after working her first shift at 9 to 5 job

Young Woman Goes Viral Over First Job Struggles

A young woman has recently gone viral after she broke down in tears over the stress of her first full-time job.

The Harsh Reality of Adult Life

The transition from being a university student to entering the working world can be rough. Suddenly, the freedom to skip a lecture and catch up later via podcast is gone. Showing up hungover isn’t a valid excuse for being late to the office, and your friends aren’t available for a midday pint because they have full-time jobs too. Adult life, eh?

Brielle’s Viral Breakdown

Brielle, a TikTok user, recently shared her struggles about moving into the working world. In her emotional video, which features the overlay text: “qotd in a 9-5 how do u have time for ur life,” Brielle openly expresses her frustrations.

Through tears, she explains, “I know I’m probably just being so dramatic and annoying, but this is my first job, like my first 9-to-5 job after college.”

In the video, Brielle talks about commuting into the city for work. “I’m in person, and I’m commuting in the city, and it takes me f***ing forever to get there. There’s no way I’m gonna be able to afford living in the city right now, so that’s off the table,” she says.

Brielle vented about how stressful and time-consuming her new job has been.

The Daily Grind

To make it to work on time, Brielle has to catch a train at 7:30 a.m., not getting home until at least 6:15 p.m. Once home, she feels she doesn’t have time for anything else.

“I want to shower, eat my dinner, and go to sleep,” she admits. “I don’t have time or energy to cook my dinner either. I don’t have energy to work out, like, that’s out the window.”

Brielle clarifies that her issue isn’t with the job itself but rather the long office hours and commute. She wishes for remote work, explaining, “If it was remote, you get off at 5, and you’re home, and everything’s fine.”

Struggling to Balance Life

While acknowledging that things could be worse, Brielle still finds herself questioning how to maintain a social life. “I know I could be working longer, but I literally get off [and] it’s pitch black. How do you have friends? How do you have time to meet a guy? How do you have time for dating? I don’t have time for anything, and I’m so stressed out,” she confesses.

She clarified that it wasn't the job itself but rather her long commute that she has an issue with.

Support and Criticism from TikTok Users

The comments section of Brielle’s video flooded with responses from fellow TikTokers. Some offered support, echoing her frustrations about the outdated 40-hour workweek.

One supportive user commented, “The 40-hour work week is beyond outdated, and your feelings are totally valid.”

Another related, “I remember having this same realization… like this is what I couldn’t wait to grow up for? To live like this?”

However, not all comments were sympathetic. A number of trolls criticized Brielle, labeling her as ‘weak’ for struggling with her job.

One user wrote, “Welcome to life, poor privileged baby. The rest of us do it. Get used to it. It’s OK for the rest of us… right?”

Another harshly advised her to “rid your butt of laziness.”

Brielle’s Response and Call for Change

Despite the criticism, Brielle stood by her comments. Speaking with The Independent, she called for societal standards to change.

“I want to be able to talk for this next generation and explain that a 40-hour work week plus commute is not necessary for productivity,” she stated.

Brielle expressed appreciation for the positive feedback from sympathetic workers and hopes that more companies consider adopting a modern approach to the work week. “Especially after so many people are used to being remote after Covid,” she added.
