What to Do If You Spot This Insect Close to Your House

Uh-oh! There’s a little bug called a silverfish that you definitely don’t want to find in your home. Why? Well, it could be a sign of a bigger problem lurking in the shadows.

Silverfish are those silver insects without wings. They have a slim, fish-like body shape, which is how they got their name. While they won’t directly harm you, they have a sneaky habit of munching on your food. They particularly enjoy chowing down on carbohydrates like oats, cereal, and starchy foods. But it’s not just about their food preferences. Seeing a silverfish inside your home could actually be a warning sign of a much larger and expensive issue that you’ll want to address right away.

These little critters have six legs, two long antennae, and three long protrusions on their backside that resemble additional antennae. If you spot one of them inside your home, it could mean you have an unresolved water problem or a patch of dampness. Ignoring it could lead to hefty repair bills in the future.

Just like cockroaches, silverfish are considered household pests. They scuttle around at night, invading your cabinets and devouring your food. If you happen to spot these pesky bugs, it’s time to call in the experts. Reach out to an exterminator to eliminate the silverfish infestation. But don’t stop there! It’s also crucial to contact a contractor to investigate any potential water issues in your home. After all, silverfish thrive in a high-humidity environment, and they need that moisture to survive.

These annoying creatures can survive up to a year without food as long as they have access to water. With a preference for humidity levels above seventy-five percent, they absolutely adore moisture and water. You’ll often find them hanging out in damp places around the house, such as bathrooms, basements, kitchens, laundry rooms, garages, and, most annoyingly, in cabinets.

If you spot silverfish in your home or apartment, it’s a clear signal to inspect the rest of your abode. This infestation suggests there’s likely some significant dampness in your house, which could potentially cause damage to its structure. So, along with contacting an exterminator, make sure to call a contractor to assess any possible water problems. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Nipping the problem in the bud now will save you from headaches and costly repairs down the line.

Remember, if you’ve laid eyes on a silverfish, don’t underestimate the situation. Tackle the problem head-on and spare yourself unnecessary stress in the future.
