New Safety Initiative in Pembroke, Ontario
In Pembroke, Ontario, certain parking spots now feature a new symbol—a handshake. These designated areas outside the Pembroke OPP station at 77 International Dr. serve as community safety zones for online transactions.
Community Safety Zones for Online Deals
The Upper Ottawa Valley OPP has introduced these zones to ensure safety when meeting in person for online purchases. According to an OPP news release, “Project Safe Trade aims to establish a ‘community safety zone’ at an OPP detachment parking lot to facilitate online property transactions.” The goal is to shift online transactions from private locations to public spaces.
Always Accessible and Convenient
No appointments are necessary as these secure trading spots are available at all times. With the busy holiday season approaching, Project Safe Trade is perfectly timed to address the increase in online property transactions. Steph Neufeld, commander of the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP detachment, emphasized that this initiative is aimed at reducing crimes related to online marketplace deals.
Reducing Fraud Risk
Const. Mike Mahon told CTV News that these zones help prevent potential fraud. If a deal seems too good to be true, meeting at these designated spots can serve as a red flag if the other party is hesitant.
Police Involvement
While the OPP won’t act as witnesses, mediators, or document providers during transactions, officers will intervene if a transaction escalates into a criminal matter.
Tips for Safe Online Transactions
If you choose not to use these zones, here are alternative safety measures:
- Meet in a busy public space.
- Bring a trusted friend or family member as a witness.
- Conduct transactions during daylight hours.
- Keep all communications between yourself and the buyer/seller.
Expert Advice
Technology analyst Carmi Levy advises slowing down during the holiday rush and doing your homework. Verify the seller’s background and insist on testing any device before handing over money. This ensures that the item works as expected and reduces the risk of fraud.
