Most of us have at least one ceiling fan in our homes. I love the breeze and white noise they create, so we have one in every bedroom. However, I recently learned that ceiling fans should spin in different directions for summer and winter. Who knew?
Summer Fan Direction
In the warmer months, set your ceiling fan blades to spin counterclockwise. This pushes air down towards you, cooling you off and creating more airflow in the room. This adjustment makes your air conditioning system more efficient and can reduce air conditioning costs by up to 40%.
Winter Fan Direction
In the cooler months, switch the fan direction to clockwise. This helps distribute heat more evenly throughout the room and can reduce heating costs by up to 15%. It’s a simple and effective adjustment.
How to Switch Fan Direction
If you’ve never switched your ceiling fan direction before, it’s easy with modern fans. If your fan has a remote, it likely includes a direction switch option. If not, there is usually a switch on the fan’s base, just below the blades. For vertical switches, flip it up for winter and down for summer. For horizontal switches, flip it left for summer and right for winter. If your fan lacks a remote or switch, it might be time for an update. Also, remember to clean your ceiling fan blades periodically.
