Proper Ways to Dispose of Cooking Oil

When Oil Doesn’t Solidify

If cooking oil doesn’t solidify as it cools, pouring it down the drain or throwing it in the trash can be messy and wasteful. Instead:

  1. Let It Cool: Allow the cooking oil to cool naturally.
  2. Solidify It: If the oil solidifies, toss the chunks directly into your garbage. Use a container or bag to avoid messes.
  3. Container Disposal: If the oil remains liquid, pour it into a disposable container, like an empty milk carton or plastic bottle. Seal it securely.
  4. Dispose of the Container: Throw the sealed container away in your regular trash.

Oats as Oil Absorbents

For small oil spills, oats can absorb the oil. Sprinkle oats over the oil, and they will soak it up. However, for larger quantities of cooking oil, follow the methods mentioned above. Using oats for large amounts is inefficient and wasteful.

Proper cooking oil disposal is essential for your plumbing and the environment. Avoid pouring oil down the drain, consider turning it into bird feed, or follow the steps for responsible disposal. By doing so, you prevent costly plumbing issues and contribute to a cleaner, greener world.
