Crack Pipe Vending Machines on Long Island: A Community Crisis
On Long Island, New York, just east of Brooklyn and Queens, criminals have installed vending machines selling crack pipes, threatening local communities. Illegally placed in public areas, these machines were originally designed to sell tampons but have been refurbished to distribute crack pipes to everyone, from drug addicts to curious children.
Police Action and Community Impact
Fortunately, police have removed three of these vending machines, preventing easy access to dangerous drug paraphernalia. Suffolk County has a long history of drug abuse, and despite the police department’s efforts to combat drug-related problems, new issues like these crack pipe dispensers continue to emerge.
The “Sketch Pens” Outrage
These vending machines sell “Sketch Pens” for two dollars each, enraging the public. Each ceramic tube includes a filter, making it easy for users to smoke crack. Police are still investigating who installed the machines, suspecting either drug dealers or unscrupulous entrepreneurs operating without proper permits.
Community and Official Responses
Suffolk County Police Department is determined to solve this problem. “At first we were like, ‘Could this be a joke?’ But then we saw how intricate it was and realized it wasn’t a joke,” said Michael Loguercio, a councilman for Brookhaven Town District 4, in an interview with The New York Post.
Residents, frustrated by the ongoing drug issues, were shocked by the criminals’ innovation. Suffolk County suffered 337 heroin-related deaths between 2009 and 2013, the highest rate in New York state. Anthony Minichini, a local resident, discovered one of the crack vending machines near a bus stop and expressed his disbelief.
Official Statements and Economic Context
Local government officials also condemned the vending machines. Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine remarked, “People selling crack saw trouble from their users getting crack pipes and thought this would be an ingenious solution.”
In Suffolk County, where the median home price is $376,700—more than twice the national median—such criminal activities are particularly distressing. Despite the high cost of living, it’s disturbingly easy for drug users to buy these “Sketch Pens” from vending machines.
