Every Saturday, I accompany Grandpa on our walk to the nursing home just a few blocks away from our house. Despite Mom’s initial concerns about me missing out on playtime with friends, Grandpa and I find joy in visiting the elderly residents who can no longer care for themselves.
Meeting Our Friends
Grandpa always reminds me, “Whoever visits the sick gives them life.” Our first stop is to see Mrs. Sokol, fondly known as “The Cook.” She delights in recounting her days as a renowned chef in Russia, where her chicken soup attracted visitors from miles around.
Next, we visit Mr. Meyer, or “The Joke Man.” Gathered around his coffee table, he entertains us with jokes, some hilarious, some perplexing, but always with contagious laughter that fills the room.
Adjacent is Mr. Lipman, known as “The Singer,” whose robust voice fills the air with energy as we join him in song during each visit.
Cherished Moments
We also visit Mrs. Kagan, lovingly called “The Grandmother,” who proudly shares pictures of her grandchildren that adorn her room.
In contrast, Mrs. Schrieber, “The Memory Lady,” transports us through time with vivid stories from her past, each memory a cherished tale.
Lastly, there’s Mr. Krull, simply known as “The Quiet Man,” who listens attentively to our conversations, offering nods of encouragement and a warm smile.
A Special Visit
One Saturday, Grandpa fell ill and had to stay in the hospital. Unsure of visiting without him, I remembered his words: “Nothing should stand in the way of doing a good deed.” Bravely, I went alone.
Our friends were delighted to see me, though saddened by Grandpa’s absence. They comforted me, sharing their stories, jokes, songs, and memories. Their kindness lifted my spirits during a difficult time.
A Surprise for Grandpa
Days later, when Grandpa was still unwell, our friends from the nursing home surprised us with a visit to his hospital room. The Cook brought homemade chicken soup, The Joke Man lightened the mood with his jokes, and everyone shared heartfelt moments that brought laughter and tears.
Their visit seemed to work wonders. Grandpa’s health began to improve steadily, surprising even the doctors who called it a medical miracle.
Today, Grandpa is back on his feet, thanks to the love and support of our friends. Every Saturday, rain or shine, we continue our tradition of visiting The Cook, The Joke Man, The Singer, The Grandmother, The Memory Lady, The Quiet Man, and even the woman behind the desk at the nursing home.
Their companionship and kindness remind us of the power of friendship and compassion in healing the heart and soul.
