Celebrating Heritage: A Controversial Gesture
Inception of the Idea
Jim Boggess, the owner of a deli in Flemington, wanted to commemorate his background with his community.
The Provocative Sign
Instead of getting the expected reaction, his handwritten placard, “CELEBRATE YOUR WHITE HERITAGE IN MARCH, WHITE HISTORY MONTH,” ignited outrage.
Customer Outcry
One consumer, Bhakti Curtis, expressed significant disapproval, seeing the billboard as ridiculing Black History Month and associated it with racial connotations.
The consequences unfold
Despite law enforcement’s determination that the sign was not inherently discriminatory, the damage had been done. Boggess’ deli closed due to declining customer numbers and financial difficulties.
A Request for Support
Boggess launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Jimbos white history sign gone bad” to seek public support in his recovery.
Expressing Resilience
Boggess expressed gratitude for the assistance received, but mourned the loss of his firm and the denial of his American dream, emphasising his determination to persevere and seek alternative jobs.
