A Controversial Celebration
Jim Boggess, a deli owner in Flemington, sought to celebrate his heritage with the community. He displayed a handwritten sign in his Main Street deli, inviting people to “CELEBRATE YOUR WHITE HERITAGE IN MARCH, WHITE HISTORY MONTH.”
However, the sign sparked outrage instead of celebration. One customer, Bhakti Curtis, voiced his objections, finding the sign offensive. He complained to the Flemington Police Department, alleging that the sign mocked Black History Month and had KKK connotations.
Despite the police finding no racism in the sign, Boggess faced repercussions. After enduring public scrutiny for four days, he removed the sign. Nevertheless, the damage was done, leading to a decline in customers and financial struggles.
A month later, Boggess had to shut down his deli due to the fallout from the sign controversy. In an attempt to recover, he launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Jimbos white history sign gone bad,” seeking support from the public.
Seeking Support
In his appeal, Boggess expressed his dismay over the backlash and his desire to celebrate his heritage like everyone else. He received letters of support from across the country but lamented the loss of his customers and the demise of his American dream.
