A few hours after my neighbour left, I called children services to take care of her six children at her request.

Debate about a woman’s decision to call Child Services after her neighbour left six children on her doorstep with the promise that she would return later was prompted by a recent event that was shared on Reddit. When the woman, known as OP (Original Poster), was suddenly left in charge of taking care of the children, she found herself in a difficult situation.
OP described how the children’s mother, who was well-known for convincing neighbours to watch the kids, abandoned her to care for the six-month-old to seven-year-old youngsters. The mother insisted and hurriedly left, leaving OP with little alternative than to take the kids in despite her declaration that she couldn’t care for them.

OP tried to contact the mother because she was feeling overburdened and worried about the kids’ welfare, but her attempts were unsuccessful. She sent a warning message and eventually got in touch with Child Services after receiving no answer. Even after receiving criticism from her spouse—who had been in foster care himself—OP stuck by her choice and put the children’s safety first.
Due to her husband’s criticism that she might have abruptly separated the children from their mother, OP’s action caused controversy. OP struggled with guilt and wondered if she had done too quickly, even in spite of her husband’s worries. Her perspective on the effects of foster care and its reality on children changed as a result of the experience.

The event brought to light the challenges associated with being a carer and the tough choices people may have to make in order to protect the security and welfare of the youth in their neighbourhood. The difficulty of striking a balance between accountability and empathy when ensuring the welfare of children are brought to light by OP’s narrative.
