A Childhood Promise Fulfilled
We all remember our childhood sweethearts, that first love we vowed to marry one day while we were still in single digits. For Matt Grodsky, this wasn’t just a childhood fantasy. At three years old, he stood up in front of his preschool class and declared he would marry his sweetheart, Laura Scheel.
Love at First Sight
Matt and Laura met at their preschool in Phoenix, Arizona. They quickly became inseparable, doing everything together and charming everyone with their adorable bond.
“We have very fond memories of each other,” the couple recalled. “Matt recited lines from ‘The Lion King,’ and Laura taught him how to draw and swing. We went on playdates and movies with our parents.”
Their parents thought it was just puppy love, but the young couple proved them wrong.
“One of my earliest memories is standing up in front of my preschool class, declaring that I would marry Laura someday,” Matt told PEOPLE.
Separation and Reunion
However, the two parted ways when they attended different elementary schools. They only saw each other in family Christmas card photos. Years later, a mutual friend reconnected them in high school, and they began dating. College took them to different states—Laura to Northern Arizona University and Matt to Columbia College Chicago, 1,600 miles apart.
Determined to make their long-distance relationship work, they figured out a visiting schedule that suited them both.
A Romantic Proposal
In their senior year, Matt had serious intentions. He arranged to meet Laura at their preschool, where it all began. After asking for her dad’s blessing and having a family member secretly capture the moment, Matt proposed.
“I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, is this happening?’” Laura said. “I saw the ring and thought, ‘This is gorgeous. I’m so happy with it.’”
Matt’s brother brought out a picnic basket, the same one their dad used when he proposed to their mom, filled with bridal magazines and sparkling cider. The newly engaged couple celebrated the occasion.
A Fairytale Wedding
On December 30, 2016, Matt and Laura got married. Grodsky’s uncle, who officiated the marriage, remarked, “For most kids in preschool, it’s about finding your snacks and sleeping mats, but for them, it was about finding their soulmates.”
A True Love Story
