Why You Should Think Twice Before Ordering Lemon Water at Restaurants

When dining out, a server will often ask if you’d prefer flat water, sparkling water, or lemon water. While lemon water is known for its natural health benefits, it might be better to enjoy it at home. Several studies suggest that lemon water served at restaurants may not be as safe as you think.

Hidden Germs on Lemon Wedges

A study by ABC News revealed some unsettling findings about restaurant lemons. When they swabbed lemon wedges from various restaurants, they discovered that half of the samples were contaminated with human fecal matter. You might wonder, “How could lemons possibly get contaminated like this?” ABC’s hidden cameras caught employees handling lemons with their bare hands, without gloves or tongs. If these employees hadn’t washed their hands properly after using the restroom, it’s easy to understand how these lemons could become tainted.

The Shocking Findings in Lemon Water

Another study published in the Journal of Environmental Health tested 76 lemons from 21 different restaurants. The results were alarming—nearly 70% of the lemons were covered in microbes and bacteria, including E. coli, which can cause severe illnesses and other health issues. That’s definitely not something you want floating in your drink.

Playing It Safe

It’s no secret that restaurants aren’t always the cleanest places, so it’s wise to be cautious. To avoid nasty germs, always wash your hands before eating. As for that lemon water? You might want to skip it the next time you’re dining out. Enjoy the benefits of lemon water in the safety and cleanliness of your own home instead.
