The Growing Threat

Many people install surveillance cameras to protect their privacy. Despite this, robbers often find new ways to break into homes. Recently, Kim Fleming Cernigliaro from Texas shared a concerning experience to raise awareness about a new trick used by burglars.

The Incident

Kim was alone at home when she heard someone knocking on her door. The knocking soon turned into loud pounding. Since she wasn’t expecting anyone, she decided to wait and not open the door. As the noise continued, she grew anxious and delayed checking outside.

After some time, when the noise seemed to have stopped, Kim went downstairs to open the front door. She then noticed a rubber band on the door handle. Unsure of its purpose, she called the police.

Police Explanation

When the police arrived, they revealed that others in the area had reported similar rubber bands on their door handles. The officers explained that robbers use this tactic to gain entry.

The Rubber Band Trick

The rubber band keeps the door latch propped open. When a homeowner opens the door, the latch stays open, allowing burglars to push their way inside. With the latch open, the homeowner can’t close or lock the door.

A Warning to Others

Kim is now warning others to be cautious when opening their doors to strangers.
