Easy Ways to Clean Tile and Grout
Cleaning tile floors is simple, but tackling dirty grout can be challenging. Fortunately, there are effective methods to brighten grout without scrubbing.
Why Clean Floor Grout?
A clean grout line enhances the appearance of your floor. Even if your tiles shine, dirty grout can make the whole area look unkempt. Regular cleaning prevents grime buildup that can damage the grout seal, which can be costly to replace. Additionally, clean grout helps avoid mold and mildew, which can pose health risks.
Why Grout Gets Dirty
Floor traffic is a major cause of dirty grout. Shoes track dirt that settles into grout’s porous surface, especially in high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Mopping without sweeping first can push dirt into grout lines, worsening the problem.
Cleaning Grout Without Scrubbing
If you prefer to avoid scrubbing, here are some effective methods:
Pre-Cleaning Preparation
Before applying any cleaner, remove dust and dirt. Sweep or vacuum the floor, then mop with hot water to loosen grime. Test your chosen cleaner on a small area to ensure it doesn’t damage your tiles.
Using Hydrogen Peroxide
Create a paste with ½ cup baking soda, ¼ cup hydrogen peroxide, and a teaspoon of dish soap. Apply the paste to grout lines, let it sit for 5–10 minutes, then wipe it off with a clean cloth. Rinse with warm water and allow the grout to dry. Note: Avoid storing excess cleaner in a sealed container as it may cause breakage due to carbon dioxide buildup.
Natural Cleaning Solution
For a natural approach, mix:
- 2 cups water
- ¼ cup vinegar
- ¼ cup lemon juice
- ½ cup baking soda
Apply the mixture to grout lines, let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then rinse with warm water. For stubborn stains, you may need to lightly scrub with an old toothbrush.
Using Oxygen Bleach
For urgent whitening, mix 3 tablespoons of powdered bleach with water. Apply the mixture with a sponge, let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then rinse well and dry. Wear gloves and avoid skin contact with bleach.
Cleaning Shower Grout
Shower grout faces moisture and soap scum buildup. Mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, apply to grout lines, and let it sit for 10 minutes. Wipe off the mixture and rinse. Allow tiles to dry before using the shower.
Removing Mould from Grout
For mould, use sodium percarbonate. Mix 2 tablespoons with 2 cups of water and apply to the affected areas. Lightly scrub, let it sit for 10–15 minutes, then rinse and dry thoroughly.
Maintaining Tile Grout
Apply a grout sealer to repel moisture and dirt. Reapply the sealer annually. Reduce dirt by keeping shoes clean and sweeping or vacuuming regularly. For stubborn stains, consider a power scrubber with a grout attachment.
For an easy and professional finish, consider hiring a home cleaner to maintain your floors.
