A Fond Memory of Days of Our Lives
During my teenage summers, I eagerly watched Days of Our Lives. This long-running series introduced many vibrant characters, but Drake Hogestyn stood out as one of the most memorable.
A Heartfelt Goodbye
Today, we mourn the loss of this beloved star, who passed away just one day shy of his 71st birthday. Known as John Black, Donald Drake Hogestyn left an indelible mark on daytime television. After an impressive 38 years and nearly 4,300 episodes, his death has left fans heartbroken.

Early Life and Journey to Fame
Born in 1953 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Hogestyn showed promise early on. His father came from New York, and his devoted mother nurtured his talents. In the 1980s, Hogestyn began his acting career with Columbia Pictures. In a talent search attracting 75,000 hopefuls, he was one of only 30 chosen for a significant role in the prime-time series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
A Promising Baseball Career
Before captivating audiences, Hogestyn was a promising baseball player drafted by the New York Yankees. He excelled as a third baseman in their minor league system. Unfortunately, an unexpected injury dashed his dreams of playing at Yankee Stadium and led him to pursue acting instead.

Rise to Stardom
In 1986, Hogestyn debuted on Days of Our Lives, first appearing as a mysterious character called “The Pawn.” He quickly won audiences’ hearts, transforming into the iconic John Black. Over the years, he navigated dramatic storylines filled with amnesia, espionage, and intense relationships. His on-screen romance with Deidre Hall, who portrayed Marlena, defined their characters as a supercouple on daytime television.
Awards and Recognition
Hogestyn’s talent earned him numerous nominations and wins at the Soap Opera Digest Awards, including Favorite Hero and Favorite Couple alongside Hall.
The Shocking Departure
In 2008, fans were stunned when Hogestyn and Hall were let go from Days of Our Lives due to budget cuts. However, their demand was undeniable, and they returned to the show a few years later, much to the delight of devoted fans. Tragically, Hogestyn made his final appearance on the soap on September 9, 2024, just weeks before his passing.
A Lasting Love
Drake and his wife, Victoria, shared a profound love that began in their teenage years. They married in 1986, the same year Hogestyn joined Days of Our Lives, and raised four children together.
Legacy and Passing
Sadly, Drake Hogestyn passed away from pancreatic cancer on September 28, 2024, in Los Angeles. His family announced the news with heavy hearts, sharing how he faced his diagnosis with incredible strength. After an unbelievable fight, he passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.
Remembering a Legend
As we remember Drake Hogestyn, we celebrate the joy he brought to our lives through his performances and the love he shared with his family. He will forever hold a cherished place in television history and in the hearts of his fans. My condolences to his family, friends, coworkers, and fans. Rest in peace, Drake!
