Holm’s Unforgettable Moment
Shala Holm’s stunning encounter with a giant snapping turtle at Niemeyer’s Rugged River Resort has captured online attention. The viral photo she took reveals the turtle’s dinosaur-like head and menacing claws reaching for a fish basket.
A Surprising Discovery
While fishing peacefully with her daughter on the Mississippi River, Holm heard a peculiar sound. Her daughter’s alertness led them to the riverbank, where they spotted a colossal snapping turtle investigating their fish basket.

A Close-Up Encounter
Startled, Holm quickly lifted the basket, causing the turtle to swim away. The following day, curiosity led Holm and her daughter back to the spot. This time, the massive reptile returned, allowing Holm to capture more close-up shots.
Estimating the Turtle’s Size
Though the turtle’s exact size is uncertain, Holm estimates its front legs were as thick as her wrists. She believes it was a snapping turtle, Minnesota’s largest turtle species. Adult snapping turtles typically range from 8 to 14 inches in length and weigh between 10 to 35 pounds, with some reaching up to 65 pounds.

Expert Evaluation
Holm shared her remarkable photo with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Experts estimated the turtle was at least 15 years old, possibly up to 30. Sheila Niemeyer, co-owner of the resort, posted the photo on Facebook, sparking nearly 1,000 comments and thousands of shares.

Public Reactions
The post received widespread attention, with reactions ranging from amazement to humorous concerns about swimming in such waters. Despite its intimidating appearance, snapping turtles are generally not dangerous. Erica Hoaglund from the Minnesota DNR reassured the public that these turtles avoid humans and pose minimal threat.

Conservation and Future Visits
Snapping turtles are crucial to ecosystem health, consuming decaying matter and maintaining water quality. However, they face threats like habitat loss and vehicle collisions. Despite this extraordinary encounter, Holm looks forward to returning next summer, hoping for another glimpse of this magnificent creature. Her story continues to captivate and inspire, highlighting the wonders of nature.
