A Heartwarming Return: The Story of a Crib and a Grieving Mother
A Mother’s Heartbreak
Valerie Watts eagerly awaited her baby’s arrival, filled with joy and excitement. Her happiness turned to heartbreak when she gave birth to a stillborn baby boy, Noah. Her pregnancy had been smooth until the final week when she noticed a troubling lack of movement. “All week, I knew,” Watts reflected. “He wasn’t moving as much. I was very nervous.” Noah’s umbilical cord had become pinched, ending his life before it began.
The Unforgettable Crib
Watts was devastated and couldn’t bring herself to part with the crib she had bought for Noah. It stayed in her home as a constant reminder of her loss. At a yard sale, Gerald Kumpula noticed the crib and wanted to buy it, even though it wasn’t for sale. “When he asked if I was selling it because he made benches, I hesitated,” Watts admitted.
The Yard Sale Encounter
Kumpula, who lived nearby and had a workshop in Cokato, saw the crib at Watts’ yard sale. His wife, looking through baby clothes, asked how old Watts’ son was. Watts explained that he had passed away in July. Kumpula then realized the significance of the crib and decided to do something special.
A Thoughtful Gesture
Kumpula bought the crib, transformed it into a bench, and returned it to Watts. “I started crying instantly,” Watts said. The bench now serves as a reminder of difficult times but also brings comfort to the grieving mother.
